Honoring Our Past, Lighting the Future

(1961-2011) a 50 year history of Southwestern Oregon Community College – 2011

To honor the 50th anniversary of Southwestern Oregon Community College, Bill Lansing was asked to write a book documenting the path of building a community college from the ground up. The story begins in 1961, with the college district chartered by then governor Mark Hatfield and with the support of the local longshore union, the community college became a reality. It was the first community college, so chartered, in Oregon. The campus started in used WW II buildings at the North Bend Airport in Coos Bay. From there, the campus migrated to undeveloped rural land bordering Empire Lakes and evolved into the beautiful campus we see today. The book is about how the college maneuvered through the adversities of funding, national trends and local economies to provide diversified opportunities for the people of southwestern Oregon. It is filled with interesting historical photos and sparkling narrative. The hard bound book is available to purchase through my website or through the Southwestern Oregon College Foundation by contacting: Executive Director of Resource Development & College Foundation, Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Avenue, Coos Bay OR. 97420. All money goes to the SWOCC Foundation to provide additional scholarships.
